Green Hot Tubs

What makes Hot Spring Spas Green?

Long the most energy efficient spas on the market, Hot Springs is striving to reduce the impact of their products on the environment, both in how they are made and the materials that go into making them.

Hot Springs understands your desire to select products that give back more than they take, made by companies that are conscious about the impact they have on the environment.

Hot Spring recently partnered with Cherokee Builders for their North Carolina Mainstream GreenHome™ project, featuring a Hot Spring Vanguard® spa!

Beneath the spa cabinet are multiple layers of high-density foam that minimize heat loss.

Low-amp SilentFlo 5000® circulation pump provides 24 hour filtration while using less energy to operate than a 75-watt light bulb.

Equipment compartment is designed to direct warm air generated from the pumps and heater back towards the spa water to minimize heat loss and limit the energy required by the heater.

All Hot Spring spas include a custom-fit cover with a high R-value, dense foam core that forms a tight seal with the spa shell to maximize heat retention.

The water temperature is maintained at a constant temperature, eliminating expensive heating and cooling cycles.

Natural Water Care Alternatives

Hot Tub Natural Water Care

Only Hot Spring spas offer 100% no-bypass filtration, which means that all the water passes through the filter before it enters the spa.

Patented Tri-X® filter technology uses a three-dimensional surface area to maximize filtration power that can extend the time between cleanings.

A factory-installed FreshWater® III ozone system uses highly concentrated ozone bubbles to neutralize contaminants on contact, dramatically reducing the need for harsh chemicals to keep the water clean.

An optional FreshWater Ag+® continuous silver ion purifier provides the sanitation power of silver ions for a more natural alternative to water care, so you can limit your use of chlorine and/or other chemical sanitizers.

Waste Minimization Programs
Recycling and Waste Minimization
  • The extra material left over from forming spa shells is returned to our supplier to be ground up and reused.
  • Excess material used in spa siding is returned to the supplier for recycling.
  • Metal material waste is sent to a recycling facility to reuse and repurpose the metals into new products.
  • Hot Spring Spas produces its own power through onsite generators, easing the burden on the local power grid.
  • A corporate “Green Team” meets regularly to drive environmentally-favorable initiatives, keeping the entire company focused on being Green.
  • Brochures are printed on 100% recycled paper.

Energy Efficient Award

California’s Prestigious FLEX YOUR POWER AWARD

Below are some of the activities for which Watkins Manufacturing was recognized:

  • The company produces its own power, 24 hours/7days a week since it installed two Waukesha natural gas fired generators in 2001, producing 2.1 megawatts of power. They have achieved an overall reduction of 5.3 million kWh since installation.
  • The old roofing was replaced with high-reflection roofing that is Energy Star Rated. An upgrade of the company’s I.T. Data Center and new HVAC system, including installation of “virtual servers”, bring an anticipated annual savings of 198,570 kWh and a CO2 emission reduction of 147 metric tons.
  • An efficiency audit was performed on all A/C units, saving an estimated 197,742 kWh per year.
  • The water system level controls were adjusted and upgraded, resulting in an estimated savings of 1,244,000 gallons per year, and over 15,000 kWh.
  • Company recycling activities for 2008 resulted in the recycling of 4.2 million pounds of materials.
  • The company has dedicated “Green” and “Energy Efficiency” teams committed to continuing education, and implementing energy efficiency and green practices. The energy team has participated in several local utilities CPP workshops, the FAR-OFF workshop, the AB32 California greenhouse gas legislation workshop, the 2008 Energy Showcase, and the Constellation energy webcast “6 step strategy to reduce energy consumption”.
  • The company’s commitment to energy efficiency goes even further with product innovation. In 2008 they received an ENVY award for outstanding efforts in environmentally-friendly hot tub design. And they were among the first hot tub manufacturers to meet the current stringent Title 20 energy standards established by the California Energy Commission (CEC) on all hot tub models.
  • In 2008, the company obtained U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) membership.
  • Lighting was upgraded in 2006 and 2007 from T5 to T8 bulbs.
  • Since 2001, the company has participated in several demand response programs through San Diego Gas and Electric, the local utility company.
